Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is an educational system introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India, for students of sixth to tenth grades. It was introduced with the intention of reducing the pressure of examination in an effort to make the Indian education system student-friendly.

The evaluation system includes both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of a student’s growth and development. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation has two components-

1. Formative Assessment:

It is conducted frequently throughout the academic year and encompasses everyday evaluation like class test, assignments, projects, etc. Its main aim is to assess students understanding and knowledge and provide them with performance-driven feedback that can help improve their weak areas.

2. Summative Assessment:

This is conducted at the end of the academic year to measure the students’ learning outcomes over the entire year. It includes periodic tests, quizzes, etc. The marks obtained in the summative assessments are included in calculating the final grades.

CCE is designed to benefit both students and teachers. It helps students by providing regular feedback on their progress so that they can work on their weaker areas. It helps in developing skills, identifying strengths and weaknesses, setting and achieving goals, and creating a positive attitude towards learning.

The grades awarded to the students vary from A1 to E (trace level). Based on the performance students receive grades like A1 (excellent), A2 (very good), B1 (good), B2 (satisfactory), C1 (fair), C2 (marginal), D (unsatisfactory) and E (trace level).

The CCE system also encourages the teachers and students to focus on the core competencies, skills, values and attitudes within the actual classroom teaching learning process. With the help of the CCE, teachers will be able to guide and assess the learning progress of their students more effectively and efficiently. For making CCE more effective, a proper balance between mind (intellectual) and heart (behavioural ) is essential.

It provides an opportunity to identify the learner’s academic progress and also his/her performance in extracurricular activities. It is based on a holistic approach where the learner is assessed in different areas such as scholastic and co-scholastic activities which help in identifying not just the academic competencies but also the social, emotional, physical and creative abilities of the learner. It also allows teachers to use innovative methods to assess the student’s abilities and knowledge.
