Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is an educational system introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India, for students of sixth to tenth grades. It was introduced with the intention of reducing the pressure of examination in an effort to make the Indian education system student-friendly.
The evaluation system includes both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of a student’s growth and development. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation has two components-
1. Formative Assessment:
It is conducted frequently throughout the academic year and encompasses everyday evaluation like class test, assignments, projects, etc. Its main aim is to assess students understanding and knowledge and provide them with performance-driven feedback that can help improve their weak areas.
2. Summative Assessment:
This is conducted at the end of the academic year to measure the students’ learning outcomes over the entire year. It includes periodic tests, quizzes, etc. The marks obtained in the summative assessments are included in calculating the final grades.
CCE is designed to benefit both students and teachers. It helps students by providing regular feedback on their progress so that they can work on their weaker areas. It helps in developing skills, identifying strengths and weaknesses, setting and achieving goals, and creating a positive attitude towards learning.
It also helps teachers by allowing them to assess students’ understanding of concepts and monitor their progress. Since CCE is based on varied activities, teachers can use different strategies to assess the students and get a holistic view of their performance.
All in all, the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system is a welcome addition to the educational system and has helped in reducing examination stress. It is beneficial for both students and teachers and thus should be encouraged.

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is a method of assessing and monitoring the progress of students over a particular period of time. It involves both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of student’s learning.
This system of evaluation aims to assess all aspects of a student’s development, including academic standards, social attributes, physical and mental health, moral, spiritual and aesthetic values, reasoning and creative abilities, attitudes, aptitudes and skills.
The CCE system of evaluation is aimed at decreasing the examination load on students and increasing the personal attention that each student gets. It also helps in understanding the individual student’s ability better.
The evaluation process consists of formative and summative assessments.
Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment is an on-going process of assessment that takes place during the teaching and learning process. It is mainly used to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses, and then modifying the teaching strategies accordingly. This helps in improving the overall teaching-learning process. Classroom activities, such as project work, assignments, practical work, presentations, role-plays, journal writing, and preparation for tests are used by teachers to assess the students’ progress.
Summative Assessment:
Summative assessment is conducted at the end of the teaching-learning process. It is mainly used for grading students, or to assess their aptitude for a particular subject. Tests, written examinations, quizzes, and other activities are common methods used for summative assessment.
The CCE system of evaluation is beneficial to both the student and teacher. It helps the student to improve their academic performance, while increasing their engagement and interest in learning. The CCE system of evaluation also helps the teachers to track the progress of the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Overall, CCE helps students to develop their life skills and social skills, thereby building their confidence in their ability to learn.

It is a process of assessment through which comprehensive information on the achievements of a student is obtained and documented. It replaces the traditional annual examinations conducted at the end of the academic year.
CCE focuses on measuring learning achievements of students in two areas – scholastic and co-scholastic. Scholastic activities deal with evaluating the performance of students in traditional academic subjects, while co-scholastic activities assess them on other areas such as life skills, attitudes, values, participation in sports and other extra-curricular activities. CCE follows a eight-point grading system, ranging from A1 to D2. Each student is awarded a grade between A1 to D2 for each subject, depending on how well they have performed.
The assessment of the students is carried out on the basis of both formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment includes assignments, class tests, and projects, which help in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the students and give them the opportunity to improve their performance. On the other hand, summative assessment includes periodic tests, terminal examinations and annual examinations, which measure the students’ attainment of the syllabus.
The information collected and recorded through CCE helps in identifying the areas of strength and weakness of students, and provides crucial feedback to teachers and parents to plan better strategies for their future growth. CCE has been mandated to be implemented at all schools in India.

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is an educational system mandated by the Right to Education Act of 2009. The system was introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India in 2009-10.
In this system, evaluation of students is not limited to the traditional exams, but also includes other aspects of a student’s development such as scholastic and non-scholastic performance. It is not limited to only academic performance, but is a holistic assessment of all aspects of a student’s being.
The main aim of the CCE system is to facilitate an all-round development of the student by including both scholastic and co-scholastic activities in the evaluation process. This process emphasizes the assessment of student’s skills, interests, aptitude and attitude.
Scholastic activities include academics and performance in specific subject related activities. These activities are evaluated at regular intervals and are recorded as term-end assessments.
Co-scholastic activities include work-education, environment awareness, performing and visual arts and life skills such as communication, problem solving and leadership qualities.

The grades awarded to the students vary from A1 to E (trace level). Based on the performance students receive grades like A1 (excellent), A2 (very good), B1 (good), B2 (satisfactory), C1 (fair), C2 (marginal), D (unsatisfactory) and E (trace level).
The CCE system also encourages the teachers and students to focus on the core competencies, skills, values and attitudes within the actual classroom teaching learning process. With the help of the CCE, teachers will be able to guide and assess the learning progress of their students more effectively and efficiently. For making CCE more effective, a proper balance between mind (intellectual) and heart (behavioural ) is essential.
It provides an opportunity to identify the learner’s academic progress and also his/her performance in extracurricular activities. It is based on a holistic approach where the learner is assessed in different areas such as scholastic and co-scholastic activities which help in identifying not just the academic competencies but also the social, emotional, physical and creative abilities of the learner. It also allows teachers to use innovative methods to assess the student’s abilities and knowledge.
